COUNCIL #5293
The James V. Kavanaugh Knights of Columbus Council 5293 has been active since 1960 with a full agenda of supporting the community through grants, clothing and food drives, and other assistance. The council is led by Grand Knight Frank DeNatale and a team of council officers who collectively have hundreds of years of service to the Tri-Hamlet area.
The Kavanaugh K of C has earned Star Council recognition from the Supreme Council out of Connecticut for its emphasis on family, community, and religion. It was founded by Robert Nankervis and Joseph Mazzararella, Sr., father of Suffolk Legislator Jim Mazzarella. The group raises approximately $75,000 per year for local causes including the fire and ambulance services.
The council is noted for its annual community barbeque, a free event open to all everyone with the 2023 event celebrating the Revolutionary history of the area with period reenactments and colonial displays. The area’s Manor of St. George, William Floyd Estate, and the First New York Regiment, which saw action during the Battle of Long Island, were highlighted.
Founded 140 years ago by Father Michael J. McGiveney in Connecticut to assist immigrants and their families, the Knights were named in honor of Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of the New World. They developed through the 20th century into the world's largest Catholic fraternal organization with over two million members.
Serving in the council along with DeNatale is Deputy Grand Knight Peter Cotroneo, Chancellor Christopher Hennessy, Warden Phillip Quinn, Treasurer Peter Costelloe, Recording Secretary Louis Cintron, Inside Guard Daniel Tariol, Outside Guard Mayco Orantes, Advocate Richard Palazzotto, Financial Secretary Shawn Sexton, and Trustees John Hurley, Kenneth Reynolds, and Kenneth Olivo.
Anyone interested in becoming a Knight should call 631-281-4473. They are located at 176 Madison Street in Mastic, which is available for parties and other events. To raise funds, the Knights host bingo at the Farmingville Bingo Hall on Thursdays and Saturdays.
We come from many places, backgrounds, and stages in our lives, but we are all of one faith. We welcome new members from the community. Put your faith into action.
We are men who lead, serve, protect and defend, whether we are giving out Coats for Kids, lending a hand in disaster relief efforts, supporting local pregnancy centers by donating ultrasound machines or providing top-quality financial products. Find out more about what we do.
To join us, please contact Grand Knight Frank DeNatale at 631-281-4473.
Building a Bridge Back to Faith through Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism is our motto as we serve our community. Together, we’re empowering Catholic men to live their faith at home, in their parish, at work. These are men who lead, serve, protect and defend. We share a desire to be better husbands, fathers, sons, neighbors and role models and to put charity and community first.
Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus on the very powerful principles that serve as the foundation of our Core Values:
This Code of Ethics and Conduct demonstrates how our Core Values guide us in situations that we may encounter.
The Knights welcome donations to help with their efforts to assist the community. Mail to Post Office Box 375, Mastic, NY 11950.
